Update #7 for Wyatt Paul Sherwood
8.16.21
We met with his care team today and received his daily update and we also got a bit more information on financial help for his stay in the NICU.
At 7 days all babies in the NICU have an ultrasound of their brain. On average, according to the gestational age of Wyatt, the normal to see is a stage 1 or 2 brain bleed. With those types of brain bleeds babies normally "grow out of them". According to his neurologist Wyatt has a small questionable area. It is very difficult to see if his is a brain bleed or just part of his brain developing because it is so small and an ultrasound is a 2D image. They are NOT worried about what they see! They will continue to give him Caffeine and explained the reason for providing a NICU baby with Caffeine. Caffeine helps stimulate and develop the brain stem. It especially helps the part of the brain stem that reminds you to breath. So this helps Wyatt move from the ventilator to the CPAP and then further and further!
We were told that at 1 month in the NICU all babies have a eye test done. This is to see how the nerves are developing. They also said that if Wyatt has anything possibly wrong with his eyes the doctors are super amazing and often able to stop/correct the damage. So we will handle that milestone when it comes.
In other news, he has gained another ounce! He is now up to 2 lbs. 9.6 oz. He is completely off the bilirubin lights. This means, as long as he tolerates it, mommy and daddy are able to hold bug. They have upped his feeds to 17 ml of breastmilk every 3 hours. Due to the additive they feed him by machine over a 2 hour period and then make sure he doesn't spit it up. They are finishing up his IV fluids which is pretty much sugar water and then unless he absolutely needs it, he won't be given more.
He is so happy when he gets to be held and doing skin to skin with mommy. I am excited to see how he reacts when daddy holds him.
***Mommy Milestone: I was able to change his diaper for the first time today. It was so funny, he lifted his butt for me when I was saying "lift his booty and put the new diaper under". He is truly helpful, like everyone says, and knows what "hold your piggy's means".
He is small but mighty and such a fighter. I really love him so much. I am very proud of him and the progress he makes every single day! I know he is so loved by so many and that makes me keep fighting for him as well!
I can't thank the doctors, nurses and everyone that has been caring for us all during this time.
πππ» Thank you so much Wyatt's Warriors, please keep the prayers coming! ππ»π
